SAB
and SPU Series FAQ
What is the main purpose of the SAB/SPU line?
The SAB and SPU Series of surge suppressors are designed to provide
electronic filtering and add transient suppression for protection
of I/O modules of all major manufacturers. The products can replace
existing modules, filters, and surge suppressors (either discreet
or hybrid models) with one single component. This simplifies wiring
costs, and saves time and money.
What applications would the SAB/SPU Series be suited for?
The SAB/SPU Series is designed for protecting the AC, DC, contact
output, current output and signal input lines of I/O modules. The
protection is for current loop instrumentation and low frequency
signal/data lines.
What is the difference between the SAB Series and SPU Series?
The SPU is a hard-wired version that uses miniature field screw
terminals for the input (field) and the I/O equipment (protected)
connection. The SAB differs from the SPU in that it uses a latch
connector for the connection to the Allen Bradley I/O modules, identical
to the connector used in the 1492-IFM series of interface modules.
How many lines can the SAB/SPU series be used for?
Both the SAB and SPU Series have a 20 point base module for use
in 1-20 line applications and a 40 point base module for use in 21-40
line applications.
Does the SAB/SPU series provide any noise filtering?
Yes. The SAB Series provides
enhanced filtering to attenuate high frequency noise, EFT (Electrical
Fast Transients),
and brings equipment
into compliance with ANSI/IEEE C37.90.1-1989 W. For the SPU series,
the enhanced filtering is a separate option. These parts have the "LM" designation
in the part number.
How does the product provide surge suppression?
All active surge suppression is provided by a daughter module that
plugs directly onto the SAB or SPU base module. The enhanced filtering
is incorporated ion the base module. The suppressor modules are sold
separately in the event that the user ever needs to replace one of
them.
What type of suppression is utilized?
A unique multi-stage hybrid design provides the most effective suppression
and filtering available. The multi-stage design protects against
all types of transients: slow, fast, long duration, high amplitude.
The response time is less than one nano-second.
How is the product mounted?
Universal DIN rail mounting allows easy installation on any standard
DIN rail configuration. All wiring is connected to the base module.
What type of maintenance is involved?
The automatic reset and
fail safe design requires no maintenance. This eliminates "Out of Service" downtime
and repair costs.
What happens if current or voltage overloads the product?
The suppressor is ever
subjected to "Out of Spec" transients,
the suppressor will take the line out of service.
Are all the lines required to be utilized?
No, not all lines of a system are required to be used. For example:
A 10-line module would be used for an 8-line system, or a 40-line
module would be used for a 32-line system.
What are the available operating voltages and currents?
The operating voltage options are:
DC applications: +/- 5, +/- 10, +/- 24, +/- 30, +/- 48, +/- 60,
+/- 120, and +/- 240
AC applications: 120 and 220
The DC modules have a maximum operating current of .5A, and the
AC modules are 2A.
Will the base unit operate without the surge suppressor daughtercard?
Line continuity is not lost if the daughter module is removed however
there will no longer be any active surge suppression.
What type of warranty is offered?
The SAB/SPU Series, as well as all other Surge Control products
come with a 5-Year Limited Warranty. A copy is available for review.
What is required for an initial purchase?
For first time use, the base module and the daughter module (suppressor)
will need to be purchased together. They are priced separately in
the event that the suppressor modules ever need to be replaced.
What agency requirements do the components meet?
The performance of the SAB/SPU series exceeds the highest-class
severity level of IEC 1000-4-4 and 1000-4-5. In addition, the components
are UL 497-B pending.
